I've probably gone overboard here, but what the heck.

Regarding the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_exchange: "If you were considering creating a post detailing your likes and dislikes for your assigned author/artist/crafter, now is the time to do it. Everyone has received their prompts, and plots are percolating. Be aware that your assigned author/artist/crafter may not be on your flist and may be checking out your LJ, trying to determine what sort of story/artwork/craft to create for you. It would be a nice thing to make a public post, detailing what you like/dislike for the benefit of your gifter, especially if your LJ is otherwise flocked."

keladry_lupin: (Fanfic Means No One Dies (Severus))
We're on Day Four of the [livejournal.com profile] fangirl_tour, and things are coming along nicely. I posted my entry today, and it can be found here. I once again used fanart as dividers in between recs (I'm not the only one to have done so), so there are a dozen artists featured there, too. Severus/Hermione got the lion's share of my recs because that's what I read most often, but there's some other stuff in there, including Jeeves and Wooster, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Trek (reboot), and Quantum Leap. A few are crossovers.
keladry_lupin: (Yay (Dara))
Phil and I went to see a play in January called Sarah Was Mine at the Mysterium Theater in Orange. It's a drama about about love, friendship and finding yourself in a pre-AIDS society, and the performances were fantastic on their opening night. Now the actors are headed to New York for the Fresh Fruit Festival next month, so if you want to see a really good play, it'll be at the Cherry Lane Studio Theatre in Greenwich: http://www.freshfruitfestival.com/calendar.htm

And the festival's website is here: http://www.freshfruitfestival.com/

Bring Kleenex.

I'm very excited for Paul, Mary, and Robert and for the chance they have to perform in New York, which was Joe's (the playwright) dream. Sadly, Joe passed away a month after Sarah Was Mine premiered, but the three actors are carrying on his legacy and will give everything they have to these performances. They'll also be performing in Orange County July 9-11, so if you're in Southern California and you want details, please feel free to ask me!

Food Drive!

keladry_lupin: (Be Excellent to Each Other (Spock))
Tomorrow, the U. S. Postal Service is holding its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. I'm glad a neighbor already had cans of food by the front of the building when I went to get my mail this evening, or I would have forgotten about it! And that's all I have to do: just put some cans or boxes of food in a plastic bag and leave it for the mail carrier to pick up tomorrow. How easy is that? (I have some boxes as well as cans, so the plastic bag is by my front door; I don't want that stuff out in the damp night air.)
keladry_lupin: (SSHG Awards Round Four)
This isn't comprehensive on its own, but between my friends list and [livejournal.com profile] harmony_bites's posts, it should be cover quite a few of the bases for who and what is eligible in this round of the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_awards. I'm lazy, so I won't be sorting out which authors and fics are eligible for what categories; if the authors haven't done so themselves, then you need to do it.

If I'm missing someone's list of their eligible fics, please comment with a URL so I can include them. Also, I'll be out of town from 2-4 October, but I'll update Monday night. I will keep this updated as more eligible authors pimp their stuff, so keep watching!

[livejournal.com profile] dreamy_dragon73 reminded me that every fic in the Winter 2008 round of the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_exchange is eligible for this round of the Awards. The master/reveal list is here, and most of the authors have uploaded their fics to other archives, so keep an eye out for the stories you loved in the Exchange!

Harmony gets to be first because she's advertising not only her stuff but others' as well:

Finally! A fundraising walk on a Saturday instead of a Sunday!

http://www.teamspiritonline.org/

From their website: Come join Team Spirit and friends for this annual 10K walk!

2009 marks our 10th Anniversary of the Team Spirit Breast & Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk and again promises to be the premier walking event in the Long Beach community. Enjoy the scenic route, which winds through beautiful Naples Island, Belmont Shore and the Peninsula boardwalk, offering walkers and volunteers alike the opportunity to enjoy a first class fundraising event in one of the most picturesque settings in Southern California.

100% of the donations will go to the Memorial Medical Center Foundation to fund support groups, treatment and clinical research at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

I've been telling myself I need to sign up for one of these things so I have to force myself to get into better shape. My morning walks are going okay (even though I'm bored), but progress is slower than I imagined it would be. But I certainly ought to be able to manage six miles at a brisk pace by the end of September.

Anyone local is welcome to join my team (that I haven't started yet). I'll be registering myself when I get paid on Friday. *sheepish grin*

On an only-slightly-related note, does anyone know where I can find some good walking/breast cancer/ovarian cancer/tennis shoe icons for LJ? Cleese will do for now, but if you have recs, please let me know!
keladry_lupin: (Plotting in Progress)
In case you haven't heard of it yet, Shug has set up a new community for making and reaching a daily goal of writing at least 500 words. That sounds attainable, doesn't it? She has a few guidelines here, and you can find the comm here: [livejournal.com profile] 5_for_five. It doesn't matter what you're writing: o-fic, fanfic, whatever. Just so you sit down and make measurable progress five times a week.

I've already joined, but I won't commit to participating until RL and work slow down, which I predict will occur on 23 June. Though I had insomnia last night and did some writing/editing on an existing fic, making a net increase of 511 words, but that was a one-time thing.

Remember that May 25 is not only Towel Day, but it is also Nerd Pride Day. Always know where your towel is!
keladry_lupin: (Pretend to Be Normal)
There's a new malware/virus kind of thing that's targeting LJ communities, especially those that are large and active. It looks like this:

Obviously, don't click on any links if they're connected to a post like this. Take precautions to protect yourself and your own personal LJ accounts from suspicious activity. The easiest thing to do -- aside from updating/changing your password regularly -- is deleting any old and inactive email accounts associated with your LJ.

At the moment, I have six graphite pencils and two cardboard blenders in my hair, the dishes are dirty, I have a movie on a continuous loop, and half a dozen reference photos are taped to the living room wall.

You all know what that means.

Edit: Here's the finished product:

keladry_lupin: (Towel)
Sunday is Towel Day.

"A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

"More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

May 25th also happens to be Nerd Pride Day, though it has its origins in Spain -- doesn't seem to have made its way across the Pond yet.

A master's student at Georgetown is working on fan fiction for her thesis. There's a survey and she needs as many people from as many fandoms as possible to complete it so that the diversity of fan culture is represented.

It didn't take long; maybe ten minutes. You will need three favorite fic URLs to complete the survey, as well as a favorite author page URL.

news flash

Jan. 14th, 2008 04:50 pm
keladry_lupin: (Oh Dear Stephen)
My boss sent this along. If you're living in the US, FYI:

Beginning February 17, 2009 your analog tv will no longer receive broadcast signals as tv will only be broadcast on digital frequencies. Your choices are:

1) Use cable or satellite to receive your signal

2) Purchase a digital tv and throw away your existing analog tv

3) Purchase a TV Converter Box

To make it less expensive the Feds are issuing coupons (up to 2 per household) which will reduce the cost, but they won't be free. The website is https://www.dtv2009.gov/ where they discuss your options and let you register for the coupons. Even if you have cable or satellite tv, you'll still able to register to get the coupons. Coupons will be mailed in February or March and boxes will be available sometime after that, but coupons are only good for 90 days from the date of mailing.

I recommend if you are receiving free tv, you look at this website sooner rather than later as I assume there is a limit to the number of coupons. It's likely that by next December, the boxes will be in short supply.
