keladry_lupin: (Book and Glasses)
I really do have fanfic ADD. I have four fics that I open every day. I have several complete chapters in each one.

But I need to review a few things before I go any further on one of them. I got an idea for Severus' past from a book I read when I worked nights at the college library where my mother works days. She's still there, and I absolutely love the fact that I can just find a book in the catalog and call her, and she'll check out the book and lend it to me. It's like having my own, personal librarian!
keladry_lupin: (Meme Sheep)
When you see this, post an excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around.

I've done this one before, but I thought it'd be fun to do it again: Read more... )

Since I'm more than halfway done with my PIF presents (I'm sending them all out at once when they're all done), and [livejournal.com profile] droxy has issued a challenge to us drabble writers, I am offering the best bribe I can think of. To the first six active [livejournal.com profile] grangersnape100 Spies and Death Eaters who will commit to joining the Order outright for six months, I will commit to drawing a character or scene from the fic of your choice before those six months are out.

YOU:

1. You need to have posted six drabble ENTRIES between 1 October 2007 and 31 March 2008. Each post in a serial counts as one entry (even if there were 22 drabbles in that entry, it only counts as one); this includes every chapter of Yuletide Potions, for those of you who participated. Provide links to at least one of your drabbles, so I can click the author tag and ferret out the rest.

1A. If your first-ever GS100 drabble was posted more recently than six months ago, I want to see at least one post to GS100 for every CALENDAR month since you started writing drabbles. (Example: if your first was in December -- even 31 December -- I want a minimum of four entries to GS100 between 1 December and 31 March. Doesn't matter when exactly they were posted, just so there's an average of one a month. Savvy?)

2. You commit to making at least twelve drabble entries (not just 12 x 100 in one or three entries) for the Order between now and Halloween, all under the banner of the Order of the Phoenix. And join the Order outright, please, even if your spy points have always gone to the Order in the past. This means ALL your drabble points earned between now and Halloween go to the Order. (I will be keeping track.)

ME:

1. You name the Potterverse fic, and you may express a preference for certain scenes/chapters, but I choose what I will draw. Know this: I have not yet succeeded in drawing more than two people in one picture to my satisfaction, so please keep that in mind (to keep me sane). Also, whatever I draw will be work-safe. The artwork will be yours (online); you may make icons/wallpaper and share them (or not). The artwork will also be posted in my DA gallery. Or it could be a simple portrait of a single character, if that is what you wish.

2. The switch is easy for you, but your drabbles and my drawings will take time for us to conjure. However, I shan't wait until after Halloween to post the drawings; I'll post each when it's done. Satisfaction is NOT guaranteed; go to my gallery to decide if it's worth joining the risk of joining the Order or not. (You can see that I am drawing backgrounds now, if that makes any difference!) And if someone specific is your Severus or Hermione (or Remus or Millicent or whoever), please point me in their direction -- I can draw other people besides Alan Rickman!

My journal, my bribe, my rules (which are subject to change if you make puppy-dog eyes; I am a Hufflepuff, after all). I know I'm not the best fanartist out there (not by a long shot), but a Keladry drawing is yours, if you qualify and you reply quickly enough. Ask if you want clarification on any of my picky, fussy, entirely bend-able rules.

I shall pimp a few Nominees of the Day during this HBP round of the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_awards, but not nearly as many as I did before, for the simple reason that more of the eligible authors (that I know of) have their own LJs and are still active in the fandom.

But to start out with, I shall pimp my own fics. The following one-shots were first posted during the reign of the Half-Blood Prince:

Just a Kiss
Summary: Hermione and Severus witness a first in their daughter's life. Serial drabble, complete in 700 words.

Severus' Top Ten List (it's under my name and it was my idea, but [livejournal.com profile] subvers wrote all the good stuff, so we're co-authors on this one.)
Summary: Instead of something prepackaged, Severus decides to tell his wife exactly what he thinks about her on Valentine's Day. Complete in one shot.

The Truth
Summary: What happens when four Gryffindors and a Slytherin can't keep their eyes off a certain young woman? Complete in one shot.

Here is the nomination post; the rules for the nominations are posted there, too.
keladry_lupin: (Smile)
After almost five months, Hogwarts, a History is back on track. Not completely written, and I have some big gaps to fill in, but I have about ten drabbles done. I have at least twenty to go, most of them after this point: here's a bit of a teaser .... )
keladry_lupin: (SSHG Peas in a Pod)
I was quite pleasantly surprised to find myself nominated for an OWL Award! (Thank you, whoever did it!) My little one-shot, A Good Morning, was nominated for Best Snapshot/Drabble.

Congratulations to everyone else who was nominated, and please go vote here.

I'm looking through my files and wondering what to work on next. I have a few pre-HBP and pre-DH fics I started but never finished. One of them is very work-intensive, for reasons I'd rather keep under wraps for the moment. Three others are in various stages of progress. (This isn't counting my monster Austenverse plot bunny.) I just can't decide what to do now, or if I want to do anything at all. Nothing's grabbed me. I do have one WIP that I want to finish, but beyond that ... meh.
keladry_lupin: (Severus Bathtub)
It's still Wednesday here in California, so it isn't too late. I posted a serial drabble at [livejournal.com profile] grangersnape100 here, to show what Severus might be consider to be an ideal birthday. Eight hundred-word drabbles, and there are more on the way, since there were a few calls for a sequel, and another plot bunny bit me. Please take a look, if you're so inclined!
keladry_lupin: (Daisies)
This doesn't fall under any challenge that I can discern, so I'm not submitting these to [livejournal.com profile] grangersnape100, but I seem to be developing another serial drabble. I wrote In the Garden a few weeks ago, and this one came to me today:

***

Severus entered the room. Yseult stood in front of the mirror, smiling gently as Ginny and Luna fussed over her. They adjusted her veil, kissing her sweetly, and left Severus alone with his daughter.

“Your mother is the only woman who ever looked as beautiful as you do now,” he said, coming up behind her.

“I wish she was here,” she whispered.

Severus held his daughter in his arms, looking over her shoulder at the two of them in the mirror. “So do I.” He took a daisy and tucked it amongst the other flowers in her curly black hair.

***

I think I shall try to write some more along this timeline.
keladry_lupin: (Daisies)
Severus sat on a stump, the summer sun warming his wife’s garden. Yseult read to him from a tree branch as his hands worked with the flowers. He smiled at the sound of her sweet, childish voice stumbling over the more difficult words.

He wondered at his daughter’s love of poetry. His bride had even more prosaic than he, but after receiving a book of poems from Theodore, Yseult was addicted.

Severus scowled. It had better not be because of the Lupin boy.

He stood and crowned his daughter’s bushy hair with the daisies, chained together to make a ring.

My dears, this is a hybrid self-pimp and fic rec. A few Order members and sympathetic Spies have started a round robin over at [livejournal.com profile] grangersnape100. It's called "Yuletide Potions," and the six of us plan on updating daily -- or almost daily -- from now until Christmas weekend. (Or whenever we finish the story.) We only have a basic plot outline, so how the story unfolds is as much a mystery for all us writers as it is for our readers!

Shug started the fic yesterday with nine drabbles, and I added another thirteen today. Ginny will pick up the story tomorrow, and so on:

Part I
Part II

So sit back and enjoy many courses in a SSHG Christmas banquet that has already combined delicious appetizers of humor, angst, and friendship, with an even more varied menu to come!

Chapter seventeen of "She Was Beautiful to Him" has been posted at OWL, and is in the queue at Ashwinder.

Enjoy!
keladry_lupin: (SSHG Kindred textless)
I'm so excited, I could just squee. For hours on end.

I sent Chapter the Last out to be looked over today. I don't care if it's angsty and overly emotional and just plain BAD. I'm happy with it.

And I am NEVER posting a WIP again.

Ten Signs You're Reading a Fic by Me:

1. the hero is stoic on the outside, but he is occasionally meltingly romantic when he's alone with the woman he loves.

2. it's het, by the way.

3. cliches abound.

4. astronomy references abound, too.

5. the pairing is not canon.

6. there is always some aspect of romance in there. I can't not write it.

7. both the shero and hero are people in their own rights -- you won't see Hermione's Patronus turning into a feminine version of Severus' or Remus'. Nor will a man become so absorbed in his woman that it shakes the foundations of who he is as a person. That isn't romantic, it's pathetic!

8. you'll find references, jokes, and even whole characters from other fandoms -- most often from Tamora Pierce's Tortall universe -- in there somewhere.

8 1/2. if there's a Healer in my Potterverse fic, his or her name is always Colubra, from the doctor in L'Engle's A Wind in the Door.

9. no redheads, unless they're unavoidable or from another fandom. (See #8.)

10. their paths -- as individuals, and the one they travel as a couple -- are difficult, but the story ends on a relatively high note, when our hero and shero are at a high point. ('Cause I have to end the story at some point!) Shit will happen later on, you know that, but I stop writing on a hopeful or happy note.
keladry_lupin: (Writing Loaded Weapon)
Last week, [livejournal.com profile] dickgloucester made this post, which started the first round of the Final Word Drabble Challenge! Here are the rules (which I have tweaked a little, since I'm in charge this week):

I'll give you a one-word prompt. It has to be the final word of the drabble you post in response in my comments section. As many people as feel the urge can respond. Any rating, any Potterverse pairing/situation ... anything that grabs your muse by the short and curlies. (I do warn you, however, that anyone who so much as hints at romantic Ron/Hermione in anything resembling a favorable light will be systematically slaughtered.) Time limit of a week? The first person to post their drabble gets to choose the word for the next round. This could go on forever, or fizzle out instantly, but shall we try it?

So the last word in each hundred-word drabble this week shall be ... harmony.

Happy writing, everyone!

Gratitude!

My sincere thanks go to everyone who nominated my fanfic for this Classics round of the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_awards!

Edit: She Was Beautiful to Him is in the running for Still Simmering, the best WIP category, and Babble is a nominee for Hiccupping Solution, the best serial drabble.
keladry_lupin: (SSHG Awards)
In addition to reccing fics by other authors whose works are eligible for this round of the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_awards, I'm posting links to the four fics that I've written that are eligible, too. (No matter how badly written they are.)

Family. Complete in one shot. Summary: A moment at home. (Posted to Ashwinder 18 July 2005, but it was originally posted here at fanfiction.net in September 2004.)

Babble. Complete in two hundred words. Summary: Sometimes, a word can take on a life of its own. Sequel to "Family." (Posted to Ashwinder 29 June 2005.)

Hero. Complete in six chapters. Summary: Hermione is trapped in Hagrid's hut after the rising of the full Moon. Professor Snape is in a bad way after a Death Eater gathering, and is mortified to find that he needs Miss Know-It-All's help to get through the night. Pre-romance. (Started at Ashwinder on Severus' birthday, 2005.)

She Was Beautiful to Him. WIP, sixteen chapters posted. Summary: Professor Snape has cause to think about his most insufferable student and comes to some unexpected conclusions. (Started at Ashwinder 6 March 2005.) I'm still struggling with it, but I've started making progress ... yet again. Here's an excerpt from my next chapter: )

Well, I revised and cleaned up a one-shit that I'd posted to LJ some time ago, and then sent to to [livejournal.com profile] subvers for the final polishing. (MUAH!) The result is posted at Ashwinder and OWL, and is in the queue at TPP:

A Good Morning: a cup of coffee, a deserted library, and Hermione.

http://owl.tauri.org/stories.php?sid=6216

http://ashwinder.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=17226

Complete in one, okay for all ages. Not a real story; just a snapshot.

(I know; the summary sucks. By the time I get around to thinking about summaries, I'm on the verge of posting, and I'm too impatient to put any deep thought into it.)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] keladry_lupin
Team Name: Order of the Phoenix
Rating: keep your kindergarteners away from this one ....
Word Count: 4 x 100
Challenge: Regency
Characters: Hermione, Severus, and Crookshanks
Author's Notes: Not mine, never was. I'm not sure if this is what the mods had in mind for the "Regency" challenge, but it's what my off-kilter mind cooked up.

Title: Just Another Detention
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6 x 100
Challenges: Senses
Characters: Severus and Hermione
Author's Notes: Not mine, never was. And there's no plot, really; this series just kind of meanders here and there through the castle .... The idea of a semi-sentient castle comes from [livejournal.com profile] cavalaxis's brilliant story Falling (and, less directly, Douglas Adams).
