yay shopping

After four days of doing very little, Mom decided around six this evening that we've been sitting around too much. I didn't argue; all I've done since Boxing Day is embroider, read, cook, watch movies, and sleep. Spent all day Tuesday in pajamas.
I have been making progress liek woah on the new embroidery project. Lots of black embroidery, which is a big eyestrain headache when the fabric is black too, but it's gonna look freaking awesome when it's done.
Mom hit the new sweet shop in Belmont Shore first. No parking to be had, so I circled the block while she went in, but I got enough glimpses as I drove to know that the shop could be real trouble for me. So I have a rule: I may not go to the sweet shop unless I walk there from the hobbit hole or Dad's flat. It's four miles round trip from my place and about a mile if Dad's is the starting point, so effort and time are required in either case. But they have Uno chocolate bars, which I can't find anywhere else, and they have Popcornopolis's cheese popcorn, so I will make the occasional trip when I feel like taking a long walk and sabotaging it at the same time. Mom got four Uno bars for me tonight, so I've stashed them away where I'll forget about them and then be pleasantly surprised when I reach into that cupboard for something else.
HECK YEAH TARGET. I get into so much trouble there. I went looking for a few odds and ends -- the usual hand soap, toilet paper, and such -- and a few unusual things. I'm starting a compost bin in January with red wiggler worms for the garden, so I bought a couple of 18-gallon plastic bins (per the Compost Guy's instructions) and will drill the holes tomorrow. I don't have enough food scraps or bedding material to start the bin right now, but I should in a few weeks, and I'll buy the worms when the coldest part of the winter is over. (I can see most of you scoffing, but the ideal temperature for these worms is 59-86F, and I don't fancy keeping the bin inside the hobbit hole.) I forgot the reusable shopping bags when we went in, so I had the checkout girl put everything in the two bins. Poor dear seemed confused at first.
Sixteen Christmas tree ornaments for a dollar; I love the after Christmas clearances. I was so busy with S&M that I really missed the whole buildup that makes the Christmas season for me. I focused on the play until the 19th, and then I only had a few people to shop for, so it just skated by me. If I ever contemplate doing a Christmas play again, please tackle me, tie me to a chair, and remind me of what I'm saying now: Christmas play = no time to really pay attention to Christmas itself. I am enjoying my week off work, but it's almost like Christmas didn't happen at all because I didn't put much effort into it.
We saw a beautiful slow cooker on the shelf at Target -- big enough for a whole chicken, removable inner dish, and CANDY APPLE RED -- but they were sold out, even in the back of the store. I'll go back and look for it again. I've been despondent since Mom broke the lid of my Old Faithful; I'd had it for ten years, and I couldn't find a replacement lid anywhere. (It's holding spinach seedlings in the garden now.) The new posters on the kitchen wall have lots of yellow, black, and red in them, so I've decided to revamp the kitchen a bit. Red, red, red along with black, white, orange, and yellow. (I don't want to hear a word from you Gryffindors.) I can't do anything about the pink tile, but I can still have fun in there. And there's a red jug Mom and I brought back from Cousin Linda's when we visited her two years ago; it's the same hue as the red in the posters. So I'll be on the lookout for some funky dishes to go with the admittedly awful existing decor (inasmuch as there is decor going on), and we're looking for curtain fabric tomorrow at the fabric shop. Red gingham or a kitchen-y print would do nicely, I think; we'll take the red jug to match colors.
HECK YEAH TURKEY LEFTOVERS. I made the best dressing ever, and Mom made the best gravy ever. The turkey was a little dry, and the mashed potatoes don't taste like anything at all, but at least some of the dinner is delicious. The entire stuffing/dressing recipe doesn't fit inside the bird, so I took the rest today, put it in a baking dish, and practically submerged it in leftover turkey broth. It was amazing an hour later. Food of the gods. I think the reason so many elaborate stuffing/dressing recipes exist is that people kept adding junk to their original recipes to make them taste like something, but if you start with a good recipe, you don't need sausage, jalapenos, cornbread, or cranberries to give it flavor. We have celery, onion, bread, turkey broth, and five spices. And vegetable oil to saute the celery and onion in. It's heavenly.
Make that three Uno bars in the cupboard. *nom nom nom*
Tried to do an icon swap, but with the laptop on the blink and the 2,000+ icons I've collected for over FIVE FECKING YEARS inaccessible, it was kind of pathetic. I have room for 260-ish icons at the moment, and I only have 100 on this hard drive. Didn't think that one through when I paid for all that icon space. So I'm on the hunt tonight.
More shopping tomorrow. Mom needs to stop at a different sweet shop, then we're off to get the curtain fabric I mentioned, and then we'll finally see Deathly Hallows.
