While reading the Harvard Health Letter, I came upon an article about hiccups. Theories about what causes them, folk and professional cures that do and do not work, and some stories of documented cases. (Example: the longest case ever recorded was from a man who had the hiccups for 68 years.)

Several years ago, an Israeli man had the hiccups for four days. Old wives' cures didn't work. The doctors could do nothing. Finally, it took what the article's author described as a "strong jolt to the nervous system" -- climaxing during sex with his wife -- to cure him of his hiccups.

Is it just me, or is that screaming for a HG/SS Porn-Without-Plot to be written? If it is, must be careful -- Wonk wrote a story about a Severus who gets the hiccups during class, and Hermione startles him out of them by kissing him. It's called "A Well-Known Cure," posted at Ashwinder. Of course, the situation could lend itself to any pairing in the Potterverse, or in any fan universe, for that matter. So if anyone takes it, please leave a URL in the comments when your story is posted.

I've been tagged by [livejournal.com profile] bambu345.

1) Write down 7 things that piss you off, and 7 things that make you go mmmmmmm.
2) Tag 7 people.

7 things that piss me off:

1. My cat when he gets talkative and demanding and doesn't shut up, even when I give in and hold him on my lap
2. People who use their cellphones while driving
3. Folks who ask questions, and then get annoyed or huffy when the answers aren't what they wanted to hear*
4. Writer's block
5. When someone messes with a good thing, and ends up completely ruining it
6. When my sheets come off the corners of the bed in the middle of the night
7. When a delicious dream ends before I want it to (grrr)

7 things that make me go mmmmmmm:

1. My cat when he's purring in my lap (and not trying to eat my book)
2. Holding a baby
3. Soft-baked chocolate cookies and milk
4. A bubble bath and a fluffy novel
5. Singing to the radio
6. Trolling for icons
7. Writing

In no particular order, I tag [livejournal.com profile] somigliana, [livejournal.com profile] bonsaibetz, [livejournal.com profile] mmestrange, [livejournal.com profile] magically25, [livejournal.com profile] larilee, [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not, and [livejournal.com profile] shiv5468

*Had to explain. My dear grandmother called at 6 a.m. one day, about a decade ago. I picked up, answered blearily. She asked if she woke me up. I said yes, and was about to say that it was okay, but she hung up on me. Don't ask if you aren't prepared for the answer!!

My favorite radio station is breathing its last this afternoon. My mother introduced me to AM 570 when we couldn't agree on what kind of music to play during our very long drives to library school. She wanted books on tape (snore), and I prefer classic rock (she hates Jimi Hendrix and the Doors, and can only tolerate the Beatles for short periods of time). Dunno where she'd found this radio station, but I immediately latched onto the music: what is now referred to as the Great American Songbook. The kind of music that Rod Stewart's been singing lately. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Louis Prima, Etta James, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Ella Fitzgerald, Brian Seltzer Orchestra, Renee Olstead, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Bette Midler. Referring to these songs as The Standards is as good a term as any. I've been listening to the Fabulous 690; The Lounge ever since. (They changed frequencies about a year ago.)

So the DJs have been having their farewell broadcasts yesterday and today. The music will continue for a few more days, but the DJs are outta here after today. The programmers asked us listeners what song they should play as their official "Last Song," and they got so many responses that they're starting a countdown at 1:00 this afternoon. (I'll update with the countdown after it's over. And for the record, I requested Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's ukulele-accompanied medley of "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" for the last song.)

Public thanks go to my favorite DJs of all time; we'll never see anything so special again: Brad "Martini" Chambers, Daisy Torme, Gary Owens, Lou Simon, and Jim Duncan. And thanks to Steve Tyrell and everyone else who have contributed to the Fabulous 690 over the last three years. Best wishes for future success to all of you!

And what's happening at the frequency of AM 690, after all the hubbub has died down? Come Monday, we'll have another Spanish-language radio station in the Los Angeles area.
