Farewell to Something Fabulous

My favorite radio station is breathing its last this afternoon. My mother introduced me to AM 570 when we couldn't agree on what kind of music to play during our very long drives to library school. She wanted books on tape (snore), and I prefer classic rock (she hates Jimi Hendrix and the Doors, and can only tolerate the Beatles for short periods of time). Dunno where she'd found this radio station, but I immediately latched onto the music: what is now referred to as the Great American Songbook. The kind of music that Rod Stewart's been singing lately. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Louis Prima, Etta James, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Ella Fitzgerald, Brian Seltzer Orchestra, Renee Olstead, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Bette Midler. Referring to these songs as The Standards is as good a term as any. I've been listening to the Fabulous 690; The Lounge ever since. (They changed frequencies about a year ago.)

So the DJs have been having their farewell broadcasts yesterday and today. The music will continue for a few more days, but the DJs are outta here after today. The programmers asked us listeners what song they should play as their official "Last Song," and they got so many responses that they're starting a countdown at 1:00 this afternoon. (I'll update with the countdown after it's over. And for the record, I requested Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's ukulele-accompanied medley of "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" for the last song.)

Public thanks go to my favorite DJs of all time; we'll never see anything so special again: Brad "Martini" Chambers, Daisy Torme, Gary Owens, Lou Simon, and Jim Duncan. And thanks to Steve Tyrell and everyone else who have contributed to the Fabulous 690 over the last three years. Best wishes for future success to all of you!

And what's happening at the frequency of AM 690, after all the hubbub has died down? Come Monday, we'll have another Spanish-language radio station in the Los Angeles area.
